Moranbah State School is located in the township of Moranbah. The town was created in 1971 with the primary purpose of providing housing and services to employees and their families within the mining industry. The community is situated 200 kilometres West of Mackay and has a population in excess of ten thousand people. Moranbah is one of the largest mining communities within the Bowen Basin. The school is well supported by the community and specifically the mining companies, which is characteristic of the Moranbah township. Moranbah State School’s staff are enthusiastic and professional.

Focus on student achievement

Moranbah State School entranceMoranbah State School is a high performing school. Our performance in NAPLAN and standardised testing in reading, mathematics and science (progressive achievement tests) is strong and continues to improve. We use the John Fleming Model, with 'Explicit Instruction' as our core pedagogical strategy. Our strong focus on literacy and numeracy is supported by effective programs such as 'LEM', our phonics program. Our teachers use the Australian Curriculum and work collaboratively to design 'Explicit Instruction' lessons that best teach core skills.

At Moranbah State School, we know that teachers make the difference. Staff capability is a priority. Teachers have a clear and common understanding of our pedagogical framework and policies and procedures. We achieve this through continuous coaching and professional development, focussing on 'Explicit Instruction' and classroom management.

A supportive school environment

We believe that a supportive school environment supports student learning and develops the whole child. Our students have access to a range of extra-curricular activities including sport, instrumental music, choir, student performances. Student leaders are elected every year and our student representative council is very active.

Our students are supported by a school chaplain and guidance officer and staff from the Special Education Program (SEP). Our school is committed to providing an inclusive education to all students that is free from that is free from discrimination based on gender, language, culture, ethnicity, religion, health or disability or socio-economic background or geographic location.
